Sports Day a blast at Nukko Lake

PRINCE GEORGE – It was all fun and games at Nukko Lake Elementary School today. That’s because it was Sports Day.

The event was actually organized by the school’s Grades Six and Sven classes, who chose the different events to take place and then forming the teams of the rest of the students. But, that aside, the students had to set some personal goals.

“So they were able to say ‘Okay. What is it that I really have to work on during this activity? What I really loved was that the kids were able to identify their skills. What were they really good at? And what role would they pick when they were doing the activity,” explained Holly McGowan, a teacher at the school.

Nukko Lake is a very tight knit community and the parents get in on the action of Sports Day, as well.

“It’s just about getting them outside, being active, having fun and bringing the community together,” said Corrie Fielding, who has two kids involved in Sports Day this year. “Because we live rurally, we’re not necessarily forgotten but we’re a very small school so we want people to know that we make the best things possible for our children out here and we want to share it with Prince George.”

So the events of the day not only recognized the importance being active, but it coincided with the first day of Summer and National Indigenous Day. All good reasons to celebrate.
