SMITHERS– There are two lightning caused fires in the Cassiar Fire Zone of the Northwest Fire Centre that became larger over the long weekend.

The Southwest Tagish Lake fire was discovered July 6th and is around 41 km west of Atlin, covering around 1,400 hectares. The size of the fire increased over the long weekend due to high winds in the area on Saturday night. The fire is only being monitored by the BC Wildfire Service as of now, due to the nature of the terrain and firefighter safety considerations.

The second fire is the Barrington River fire, which originated 50 km west of Telegraph Creek on Aug.5. That fire grew to 4,400 hectares due to winds on Sunday evening. Smoke is highly visible in the communities of Glenora and Telegraph Creek, no structures are threatened.
