PRINCE GEORGE – With the warming weather, blue-green algae blooms are starting to appear in lakes across northern BC.

Cluculz Lake located west of the city is one of the lakes where blue-green algae have begun to bloom. Blue-green algae blooms are naturally occurring and can look like scum, grass clippings, fuzz or globs on the surface of the water.

People who come in contact with the algae or who ingest the water containing algae may experience skin irritation, nausea and vomiting or diarrhea.

Northern Health officials’ advices avoid contact with the algae. If contact occurs, wash with tap water as soon as possible. Weather and wind conditions can cause algae blooms to move from one location in the lake to another.
