It takes a team
I have been very privileged to work with some exceptional people. Whether in my role as an MLA or Cabinet Minister or working as a volunteer in our community and region, the job is always easier when you are surrounded by great staff, colleagues or dedicated volunteers. When you are facing challenges, sorting out complex issues, excited about new opportunities or just getting the job done on routine matters, taking on the task as part of a team makes an enormous difference.
Recently my Prince George staff, Dorothy and Alyse, joined Bill and I as we travelled out to the Robson Valley to participate in the annual Community BBQs that are hosted in Valemount and McBride. These important events started a number of years ago after a discussion about how elected leaders could work together more effectively to represent our mutual constituents. The concept was based on the fundamental belief, that working together, across jurisdictional lines meant that on many issues we could speak with one voice to bring more attention and awareness related to the pressing issues and opportunities in our region. We decided we would work together, whenever possible, as “Team Valemount” and “Team McBride”. Realistically we knew that at times we would agree to disagree, but the vast majority of the time, our job is to ensure that the voices of our constituents are heard and that we could do that most effectively as a team.
Once again this year, representatives from all levels of government participated in events both in Valemount and McBride. The “team” includes, local government, regional district, First Nations, School Board, provincial and federal representatives. Of course we communicate and meet throughout the year in the course of the work we do, but the BBQ setting allows our constituents to meet with us in an informal setting to talk about the things that matter to them. And of course to enjoy a great meal together.
It was incredible to see the attendance on a very rainy day in the Robson Valley Region. In Valemount we were hosted for lunch by the Village of Valemount Mayor and Council and the Valemount Community Forest supported by numerous sponsors. In McBride, the Mayor and Council actually did the cooking and even baked the cupcakes for the dinner event. There was lots of time for conversation, providing updates and just enjoying the company of the people we represent. Thank you to everyone who helped plan, organize and host these great events.
