Strong winds cause fires to grow in Cassiar Zone

SMITHERS– Strong winds in the Cassiar Fire Zone on Tuesday, (Aug.13) caused two of the largest wildfires within the Northwest Fire Centre to grow.
The Southwest Tagish Lake fire, and Barrington River fire grew on Tuesday. The former is located around 40 km west of Atlin and has spread towards the northeast. Despite the growth, the size of the fire is estimated at 890 hectares, which is down from a previous estimate of 1,400 hectares. As a result of fire activity in this area an evacuation order is now in place from Buchan Creek north to the Fantail River, west to Fantail Lake and east to Tagish Lake.
The second fire is located around 50 km west of Telegraph Creek and covers 4,600 hectares, the recent winds caused this fire to spread mainly southwest. This fire is currently not threatening any structures or communities.
In addition a holdover fire was detected within the perimeter of the 2018 Alkali Lake Fire, this fire is north of Highway 51 near the confluence of Beatty Creek and the Tahltan River. Holdover fires are fires that remain dormant over a long period of time and strike back up later. This fire, currently, poses no risk to communities or structures in the area.
