PRINCE GEORGE–An 18-year-old girl is taking the initiative to beautify a little area of City in an attempt to make it safer.

You may drive over it every single day, or not–but you’ve definitely driven over it at least once. A tunnel connecting on-foot commuters from one side of the John Hart Highway, to the other. The tunnel however may not feel the safest to everyone, 18-year-old Chealynn Niessen says that walking through the tunnel “can be intimidating,” especially further into the evening.

“A few days ago there was just a man sleeping. I didn’t disturb him because he’s not doing anything wrong, of course. But it’s just sad to see that this has become a shelter area rather than a walkway,” she said to us in an on-camera interview. Niessen is an artist, with a background in singing and a more recent one in painting and says she thinks a mural would make the area more user friendly–making pedestrians feel safe and deterring the current demographic from continuing to use the area.

The 18-year-old has started a facebook group advertising her idea to beautify the tunnel. Neissen still has to get the go-ahead from the City, but hopes to have the mural done before the end of the year. She’s currently got a few ideas in the works for what the mural may consist of, including one inspired by the seasons.

She is unsure just how much she might need for her initiative but says she currently has a goal to raise $500 by collecting bottles and cans from members across the community.
