PRINCE GEORGE – The wildfire season has put everyone on high alert. Even the City has a special permit for development in certain areas of town that were identified as high-risk for wildfire.

The Wildfire Hazard Development permit. It allows the City to set out mitigation requirements for development in hot spots around Prince George.

“It’s to ensure, if development occurs, if there’s a potential wildfire risk it’s mitigated to protect the homes that are getting built in the area,” explains Ian Wells, the General Manager of Planning and Development. “It’s typically dealt with at the subdivision stage.”

The idea of such a permit was first vetted when the Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic struck the city, killing thousands of trees.
