PRINCE GEORGE–During this year’s Talktober (an opportunity for the community to voice their concerns to Mayor and Council) poverty, along with safety downtown were a priority.
“Poverty reduction is one of the top items on Council’s agenda. During Talktober, Council heard clearly from residents about the concern they have about the social issues in our city, such as petty crime, drug use, and homelessness and we want residents to know that we share their concern and frustration,” says Lyn Hall, Mayor of Prince George.
The City has led or partnered with other agencies in a wide variety of initiatives aimed at improving the health and safety of the downtown including things such as increased RCMP presence, the downtown clean team, discarded needle retrieval, needle drop boxes and many others.
The latest project is the pilot project aimed at providing washroom access and storage facilities to the vulnerable and homeless living in the downtown area. One pilot which will be located on at 181 Quebec Street, will provide access to storage, washroom and outreach services. The second site on 144 George Street will provide access to storage, washroom, shower, laundry, and outreach services.
