WILLIAMS LAKE–The SPCA is reminding the public to travel with pets secured inside their vehicle after a seven-month-old German Shepard suffered severe injuries from falling out of the back of a truck.

“Chilli” the German Shepard was surrendered to the SPCA with a torn front leg. Her skin has been torn off of the tissue from her upper forearm to her armpit also severing some of her arteries.

“Chilli had such deep wounds all along her leg that the limb was beyond repair and she required an emergency amputation to save her life,” says BC SPCA Williams Lake & District Branch manager Liz Dighton.

The SPCA says it is illegal to transport an unsecured pet in the back of a pickup truck under Section 72 of the BC Motor Vehicle Act and the BC Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The SCPA wants to remind pet owners that if a pet must be transported in a pickup to use a secured crate and place it at the centre of the truck box.

Chilli’s emergency amputation and other medical costs are expected to reach $4,230.
