BRITISH COLUMBIA–ICBC is reminding drivers to drive safe this Halloween after an increase in crashes in 2018.

According to ICBC there were 370 people hurt in 1,000 crashes on Halloween last year, up from 290 in 2017. ICBC has some tips to stay safe on the road:

  • Stay under the speed limit: Especially in residential areas between the Trick-or-Treating hours of 5-9 PM
  • Expect the unexpected: Children tend to have their minds more on treats than on road safety on Halloween. Expect children darting across the street or walking in unusual places like driveways, parking lots and alleys
  • Do not pass a slow or stopped vehicle: Patience is key on Halloween night. People will be driving slowly as they keep an eye out for trick or treaters. If a car is slowing down or parked in front of you, don’t pass them the driver may be stopping to let children cross
  • Leave your phone alone: Distracted driving is one of the main factors in crashes involving pedestrians. Stay aware of your surroundings and focused on the road
  • Be bright to be seen: Children should be encouraged to wear lighter coloured costumes, add reflective tape to their outfit and treat bag, and be equipped with a flashlight or headlamp
  • Follow the rules of the road: When trick-or-treating with your kids, walk on sidewalks, cross on crosswalks
  • Plan a safe ride home: If your Halloween celebrations involve alcohol make sure you plan a safe way to get home
