PRINCE GEORGE — A Prince George couple is helping to provide medical care to those who otherwise would not have the opportunity. They have been working with Mercy Ships Canada since 2015 giving their services.

Over the last few years, Larry and Sandy Hewitt have given medical assistance in five different countries. Currently, they are in Senegal helping with some procedures that never would be needed in Canada. Larry works as a biomedical technician while Sandy is a pharmacist.

After learning about Mercy Ships they decided to give back to less fortunate places and people with their skills and opportunities they have been afforded.

Mercy Ships have been running for about 40 years. Close to 100,000 surgical procedures have been performed in that time. The ten month trip gives time for not only those procedures to be done but also for rehab teams to work with patients. After that, they come home.
