Christmas came, went, and now you’re left with a tree: Where to dispose of your holiday pine

PRINCE GEORGE–The Holidays have come and gone and that may have some homeowners eager to take down Christmas decorations and prepare for the new year, but what is the greenest way to do that?

Not everything belongs in the garbage, and your Christmas tree can still be of use, especially to the City. “Real trees can be composted at any number of our facilities in and around Prince George,” said Laura Zapotichny, Manager of the Waste Diversion Program for the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, “the Foothills Blvd. Regional Landfill, the Vanway Transfer Station and the Quinn Street Transfer Station all have compost bins.”

Trees must be cleared of any decorations before being taken in for compost.

Another option–if you’d like to hold on to your tree a little longer, is the tree chipping event on January 4 and 5. “We will be volunteering to collect all of your Christmas trees from the Holiday season,” said Dianne Graham, a Volunteer with Job’s Daughters, a youth organization for young girls and teens, “anybody can drop by and give us their tree or trees…and we will take donations. Some of the profits from the event will be going to Our Philanthropic Project, which helps children with their hearing device needs.”
