TYH: Is getting fit your resolution? Here’s how to stick to it in 2020

Dec 31, 2019 | 8:30 AM

January. A new month and the start to a new year. It usually has us making some sort of resolution or promise to ourselves, whether it’s ending a bad habit, finally taking that leap of faith or trying to get fit, we’ve all made them.

As an avid gym-goer myself, I have always noticed an influx of people at the gym in the first few months of the year; followed by a bit of a downturn in familiar faces in the months that follow. So I wanted to speak to someone who could help me, help you stick to your exercise regimen this new year.

Daniel Dyck, a Professional Trainer at Golds Gym says it’s all about simplicity and repetition, “I think most people come in and they overwhelm themselves, they think they have to sell their soul in order to get the results, but simplicity will create compliance.”

“Discipline is trading something of a lower nature for something of a higher nature. It’s a good thing to come to the gym and you’ll live longer.”–Daniel Dyck

Dyck says that you don’t have to spend two hours every day, five days a week at the gym in order to see results. Instead, try changing other small habits such as drinking more water, or eating more vegetables, even fasting, “carry that out a year from now.”

His three tips consist of: Eating Whole Foods, starting small with exercise and not going every day, find something to get you anchored at the gym listen to good music, talk to people.

A gym buddy might also be great help to get you motivated, according to a study published on the National Center for Biotechnology Information, working out with a buddy that makes you feel inadequate can potentially spark your motivation.
