No Coordinator

No new coordinator at City Hall

PRINCE GEORGE – There will not be a new position at City Hall.

That’s because Council denied a request for a new Climate Change and Energy Coordinator, which would see a financial impact of $100,407. There were also BC Hydro grants of $50,000 in each of two years.

Back on January 6th, Council approved a new Environmental Services Division, which is the amalgamating some different departments as the “first point contact with federal and provincial regulators.” The enhancement request for a new Coordinator came with it.

It was one of five budget enhancement requests. The first three were approved on January 6th, with the first budget meeting. That pushed the tax increase to 2.15% so far. The new position would have increased that tax hike to 2.25%.

But, in the words of Councillor Cori Ramsay, “we have a lot of enhancement requests.”

Instead, Council opted to wait to see how the new division would fare for at least its first year before approving a new position. However, a fifth enhancement request has yet to be decided upon. It seeks to add a number of services to improve social services in the downtown, such as additional Bylaw Enforcement Officers. That has some budget implications, ranging from .38% should nothing be approved to 1.93% if all the requests are approved.

That discussion will not happen until a formal meeting of the Select Committee on A Safe, Clean and Inclusive Downtown takes place.
