Cougars explode for four in final frame, close January on winning note
PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars (14-25-3-4) earned a convincing 5-1 home win Friday night over the struggling Tri-City Americans.
It was pretty much all Cats from start to finish Friday, dominating play through much of the first period before converting on their chances later in the game. Luke Zazula of Tri-City scored the first goal of the game in what could have been a momentum shifter but the resilience of PG came through, starting with Josh Maser’s 20th of the season.
Ilijah Colina broke the tie just 42 seconds into the third period, the first of four goals in the final 20 minutes for the Cougars. Tyson Upper, Cole Moberg, and Vladislav Mikhalchuk rounded out the scoring for the home team. Taylor Gauthier finished January with exceptional stats, posting a 4-2-1-1 record with a 2.21 goals against average and a .940 save percentage.
Special teams certainly went the way of the Cougars, scoring twice on four powerplay tries while killing all three powerplays they conceded. Shots ended 34-22 in favour of PG.
