PRINCE GEORGE – With the end to the year’s athletic season at UNBC, the school celebrates its first year since transitioning its mascot to that of a female.

A long-standing tenure by Boris came to an end and the University brought forth Alpha, the braid-dawning Timberwolf to cheer on the school’s four varsity sports teams.

“We thought why not? What is the harm in having a female mascot,” said Sports Information Officer Rich Abney. “For two decades now we’ve had really impressive athletes and thought why not go in that direction. We did some research and looked at different designs and eventually settled on Alpha.”

Abney added they didn’t want to make a big deal about the change, but rather a time to replace a worn-out Boris and look at a new look for their mascot.

For Madison Landry of the women’s basketball team, she’s proud to be associated with a university that isn’t afraid to break the norms as UNBC marks the only university in Canadian university athletics to have solely a female mascot.

“We’re on the forefront of that and I think it is really exciting. Being the only female mascot in the conference is great. It’s groundbreaking for women in sport.”

The University of Alberta and the University of St. FX do have female mascots, however, they are specific for the school’s women’s sports teams whereas Alpha cheers on both the men’s and women’s teams at the Northern Sport Centre and Masich Place Stadium.
