Highway 16

Traffic congestion in Vanderhoof concerning

VANDERHOOF – Highway 16 runs through the heart of Vanderhoof, as it does through many Northwestern communities. The difference is that industrial growth along the corridor in Vanderhoof is created a pinch point.

“You hear from truck drivers who are going [that route] and they’re talking about long waits to get into the traffic,” says Gerry Thiessen, mayor of Vanderhoof.

The concerns have grown so much that Mayor and Council recently sat down with officials with the Ministry of Transportation and Highways to express their concerns and offer suggests to ease the congestion.

“They need to look at it. Does the speed limit need to be looked at? In our mind, their needs to be more merging lanes, more opportunity to get out onto the road and merge into traffic.”

The ministry released a statement, which reads: Please attribute the below to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

“The ministry recently met with the Mayor of Vanderhoof and council members to better understand current priorities for the area. During the meeting, the mayor and council shared their concerns around a portion of Highway 16, in particular regarding the industrial accesses and traffic patterns. The ministry has heard these concerns and will be working with our engineering department to look at how to best mitigate the concerns. We will continue to work with the District of Vanderhoof to manage the impacts from development growth along the corridor.”

But Mayor Thiessen notes that, with a 1,100-person camp setting up in that community this summer, that congestion is only expected to worsen and he hastens to add that the hope is that it won’t take a tragedy to affect change.
