PRINCE GEORGE – School District 57 has formed an engagement process working group in response to the recent outcry over the proposed name change at Kelly Road Secondary School.

“In this case, the definition of reconciliation couldn’t be more relevant,” says Tim Bennett, Chair, Board of Education School District 57. “We’re asking this working group to support the District in restoring friendly relations and making feelings and beliefs compatible with one another through the upcoming engagement process.”

The district says the work will be guided by the principles of reconciliation and will be represented by various community members to ensure diversity and inclusion.

Members will include:

  • KRSS Student (2)
  • KRSS Teach Representative
  • KRSS Support Staff Representative
  • KRSS Principal or Vice Principal
  • Lheidli T’enneh Councillor
  • Lheidli T’enneh Elder
  • SD57 Trustee Representative
  • SD57 Superintendent
  • KRSS Parent Advisory Council
  • Hart Community Association Representative
  • KRSS Alumni Representative

Superintendent Anita Richardson has spent much of the week at Kelly Road Secondary School meeting with staff and students, listening to any comments and concerns they may have.

“Coming here, hearing student’s stories, sitting in classrooms and giving them the opportunity to share some of the things that really speak to us and just, well I leave here feeling so much hope for our future. Our kids are smarter than we know and capable of working through complex problems more than we are aware even as educators and parents.”

She said that the concerns rising above the rest were the students feeling that they were bypassed and acknowledging the concerns of their voices not being heard.

Meetings began this week and elements of the plan will be shared with the public before spring break.
