Mayor Lyn Hall delivers a message: Be safe

PRICE GEORGE – Mayor Lyn Hall has a message.

“I think the message that, really, has resonated throughout our province and I’m hoping will resonate with our residents here in Prince George came from Dr. Bonnie Henry. It’s really all about: Be kind, be calm but be safe.”

He encourages people to look out for their neighbours, particularly the elderly and the vulnerable. But he adds social distance options and moves to self-isolate are not optional.

“[Dr. BonnieHenry] has been very adamant about that, so all of us need to take heed.”

The City launched Level One of the Emergency Operations Centre.

“It was an opportunity for us to establish that partnership with our stakeholders, the Regional District, Northern Health, the RCMP. We have those at the table now. It was important for us to take that step because if in fact, the virus takes another step, another level of severity particularly within our community, then we’re ready to go.”

He says the decision to activate the EOC was based on lessons learned from the Nechako river ice jam and the wildfires of 2017 and 2018. But it is not, in any way, a precursor to the City declaring a state of emergency, as some communities in BC have done.

Today, City Hall’s doors remain open, But Mayor Hall is the first to admit, that is also being looked at.

“Our senior staff, City Manager take a look at operations, not just from a City Hall perspective but what we’re doing out in the community. We have a tremendous amount of work that we have to do day-to-day, just to keep the city functioning.”
