Doctors going virtual amidst COVID-19 crisis

Apr 3, 2020 | 9:00 AM

VANCOUVER—Doctors in BC are now able to provide care to patients using telephone or video in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The service is in addition to in-person care when necessary. Virtual care will allow patients to receive medical care from their doctors while abiding by the physical distancing and self-isolation orders by the Provincial Health Officer in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“Family doctors know their patients best – they know their medical histories, their families, and understand their needs,” says Doctors of BC President Dr. Kathleen Ross. “Many medical issues can be assessed and treated by phone and video.”

Ross urges patients to call their doctors first when they need medical care.

“There is a misconception that patients shouldn’t contact their doctors for routine appointments or non-COVID-19 related illness right now—absolutely they should.”—Dr. Kathleen Ross

Family physicians will also continue to refer patients to Specialists as needed.

Those British Columbians who are considered “high-risk” to contract COVID-19 should contact their doctors for advice on how they can receive medical care during this time.

Things patients should know:

  • Doctors are not seeing people in person as often, but are still booking appointments
  • Patients should call their doctors office, medical staff will assist in preparing patients for a telephone or video call
  • Patients should not arrive at their doctors office without first having phoned
  • The virtual appointment is covered by MSP, there is no additional cost
