UPDATE: 53 new cases of COVID-19 and 4 deaths in BC

VICTORIA— A total of 53 new cases of the novel coronavirus have been identified in BC.

BC’s Provincial Health Officer, Dr.Bonnie Henry announced four new deaths in the province relating to the Harrow Park and Lyn Valley outbreaks in Vancouver at Friday’s COVID-19 update.

Northern Health now has 21 confirmed cases of COVID-19. BC’s total is now at 1,174 cases.

Confirmed cases by health region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 541
  • Fraser Health: 412
  • Vancouver Island: 74
  • Interior Health: 126
  • Northern Health: 21

BC’s death total is now at 35.

Dr. Henry made note that there is one more longterm care facility outbreak brining the total to 22, with 176 cases of the virus related to the longterm care facilities.

The number of patients in hospital has gone down to 146 with 64 in the critical care unit. 641 people have recovered from COVID-19 in BC.

Henry addressed British Columbian teens saying that these times are very challenging for them, urging them to find a trusted adult in their life who they can confide in.

Henry again re-iterating that we are at a critical time and must do what we can to flatten the curve of the novel coronavirus.

Henry also addressed travellers returning to BC, reminding them that they must self isolate for 14 days upon return, “without question and without exception,” to ensure their safety and that of their loved ones.

Health Minister Adrian Dix touched on the amount of elective surgeries that have been postponed in BC, saying that a total of 11,267 surgeries have been postponed due to the pandemic, “we are committed to getting back to these procedures,”said Dix.
