VICTORIA—The B.C. Government announced new measures they are taking to improve travel for commercial truck drivers across the province during the COVID-19 crisis.

A release from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said that the installation of additional portable toilets began over the long weekend.

These additional toilets are being added to several commercial vehicle pull-outs, inspection stations and chain-up locations throughout the province.Completion of those toilets is expected in the coming weeks to provide more options for commercial drivers.

Commercial truck drivers are seen as an essential service seeing that they transport essential goods across BC, such as food and medicine.

Around 20 portable toilets have been installed at commercial pull-outs and inspection stations, with the province adding additional ones in the coming weeks.

Rest areas continue to stay open during the pandemic, with maintenance contractors working to keep those facilities clean, sanitary and well supplied.

Private industry has also stepped up to provide support for the essential transportation workers, with members of the BC Trucking Association spearheading Meals the for Truck Drivers BC pilot.

The pilot sees food trucks set up at various commercial cardlocks throughout the province.

Some restaurants along Canadian Highways have reopened their locations for take-out and restroom use for commercial drivers.

There are 203 rest areas in the province, all of which are equipped with toilet facilities.
