Trudeau announces support for workers in Energy Sector

OTTAWA—In today’s (April 17th) address to the media, Justin Trudeau announced help for workers in the energy sector, those in the art and sports sector, as well as more support for small businesses across the nation.

Trudeau announced the government would be spending $1.7 billion to clean up orphan and inactive wells in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan. The Prime Minister saying that inactive or abandoned wells can be detrimental to Canadians health, and that cleaning them will help re-employ 5,200 jobs in Alberta alone.

A $750 million fund to help reduce methane emissions while also maintaining jobs was unveiled, this fund is estimated to maintain 10,000 jobs across the country.

$962 million will be granted to regional development agencies to help small businesses get the help that they need during the pandemic.

Trudeau highlighted the importance of supporting artists, creators, and those in the sports sector during these unprecedented times. $500 million will be granted to Heritage Canada to ensure that Canadians in the arts are being supported.

According to the Prime Minister $7.5 million have been processed for the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit. The benefit is aimed at supporting Canadians who’ve lost jobs or are unable to work due to COVID-19.

Trudeau closed his address by marking the 38th Anniversary of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms reminding Canadians that in that charter there is a notion of choice, “to everyone who has stayed home and followed public health recommendations, thank you.”
