B.C.’s COVID-19 cases have plateaued, say health officials

VICTORIA—Some good news came today out of modelling data shared by Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister, Adrian Dix this morning.

According to Dr. Henry we are seeing the flattening of the COVID-19 curve in B.C. Models show that B.C.’s case rate and patient admissions to intensive care units are far below expected levels, especially when compared to Northern Italy and Hubei, China

The models show that the median age of people who’ve died is 86, the median age of people infected is 54 and the median age of people in hospital is 68.

Out of 707 people with cases of the virus, 35.8 percent have at least one chronic condition.

The bulk of cases have been seen in the Vancouver Coastal Health Region and Fraser Health, however, no health region of the province “has been spared,” said Henry.

Yesterday two new cases of COVID-19 were announced in the Northern Health Region, bringing the total to 32 in the north.

Henry made it clear that although we are seeing a “flattening of the curve” when it comes to cases, our new “normal” won’t be what “we saw back in December.”

“Our new normal for the coming months…is going to be modifications of what we are seeing right now.”—Dr.Henry

“We are a long way from done,” said Health Minister Adrian Dix mentioning that we won’t see this virus’ end until more people are immune to it and we have a vaccine.

Henry and Dix once again said that British Columbians must continue to social distance and follow health orders that are in place.
