OTTAWA—Small businesses struggling to pay rent will benefit from lower rent by 75 per cent.

Justin Trudeau made the announcement this morning (Apr.24) from Rideau Cottage. Small businesses largely impacted by COVID-19 will be able to benefit from the lower rent, which the government will cover 50 per cent of, leaving 25 per cent to the owners to pay from Apr-June.

As for larger businesses, Trudeau said that rent help for them is coming soon.

“I want to be clear. getting back to normal will not happen overnight.”—Justin Trudeau

As for getting back to “normal” Trudeau wants to remind Canadians that it will not happen overnight, and will take a deal of coordination, provincially and federally.

Once again Trudeau said the crisis affecting longterm care facilitites across the country is troubling an reiterated today that the government has spent billions of dollars in topping up pay for essential workers across the country in order to make sure that they are supporting Canadian seniors.

Military help has been requested by Quebec and Ontario to help with their longterm care facilities, something Trudeau says is not a permanent solution to the problem.

The Prime Minister highlighted that a virtual vigil will take place at 6 p.m. in memory of those lost in the Nova Scotia shooting.
