Teachers missing students hit the streets for a neighbourhood parade

PRINCE GEORGE—In an attempt to reconnect with their students, Westwood Elementary School grade 2 and 3 teachers weaved their way through the streets of the neighbourhood, in a parade on Wednesday.

For one teacher, the experience was an emotional one.

“I was holding back tears the entire time.”—Allison Westfall, Teacher, Westwood Elementary

“They looked really happy to see us,” added Westfall, “that’s a big part of our job, where we’re connected and we have those relationships with our kids.” The idea for the parade came from teachers missing their students.

Teachers dressed up, rode their bikes, honked, waived and smiled at families gathered on their front lawns as the parade made it’s way through the neighbourhood.

Students and teachers haven’t interacted with each other in the classroom since March 13, the last day before spring break, due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Dalla Lana says that Westwood Elementary students continue to receive quality instruction, with teachers emailing and sending work out regularly.

Other schools in School District 57 have also held car parades including, Malaspina Elementary and Southridge Elementary.
