CNC’s Fine Arts Class hits Zoom to re-gain interaction between students and teacher

PRINCE GEORGE—Post secondaries across the province, and across the country have had to get creative when it comes to how they choose to deliver their classes.

For the College of New Caledonia’s (CNC) Fine Arts Class, it is no different.

Betty Kovacic, a Fine Arts Instructor at CNC has incorporated Zoom calls into her class, something that wasn’t originally in her plans.

Originally she had developed a schedule for her students that laid out work that had to be completed at home. Students would update her on their work by emailing her photos of the progress.

“It was okay, but it felt impersonal.”— Betty Kovacic, Fine Arts Instructor, CNC

“People also couldn’t see what other people were doing and learning from others is a huge part of the program,” she continued.

Mary Reid, a student of the program agreed saying that the most valuable part of the class, in her opinion, was being able to share her work with her classmates in order to have discussions around it.

That’s when the idea to have Zoom calls was birthed.

“It was great to see everybody.”—Mary Reid, Fine Arts Student, CNC

“Even though you’re seeing everyone through a screen in their own spaces, you still feel like you’re getting the benefit of being together,” she added.

Reid believes that the pandemic has pushed many of our day to day aspects, online, and thinks it will continue even past the pandemic.

“This time has opened a door to a new comfort with these communication tools.”—Mary Reid, Fine Arts Student, CNC

“We’re doing more of it because there are no other options at the moment. These programs have shifted from video conferencing technology to a way of life for people,” Reid added.

She highlights how these times have pushed friends to do virtual workouts, or grandparents to read bed time stories to their grandkids through video chat.
