FORT NELSON—The search for a missing woman in the Muskwa River has been suspended.

The search for Dayna Lee-Ann Cheyenne West began on April 23rd after she was caught in the Maskwa River in a vehicle, along with another person.

On April 22nd Northern Rockies RCMP received numerous calls from people who were parked along the shore of the river when water broke through the ice dams and flooded the shoreline, preventing people from leaving.

Further reports determined that there were four people stranded on the top of their vehicle and on a small island and that their truck was submerged. Fire Rescue successfully rescued all four people.

Two other people were parked further up the shore in their car when the river level rose and were being carried away by the water. Both were able to escape the confines of their vehicle, but only one person made it to shore.

Police were unable to search for West at the time due to increasing darkness, but attempted to the next day, however, air search failed the following day. River conditions prohibited searchers from entering the water at the time.

The search was called off after an Underwater Recovery Team and Search and Rescue Crews spent the weekend (May 2-3) searching for West in the Muskwa River.

RCMP say that future searches for West will be planned in consultation with the Fort Nelson Search and Rescue Team.
