Vandals target rec sites

PRINCE GEORGE – For many people, the most disappointing places to see vandalism is in nature. Vandalism destroys the natural beauty enjoyed by those looking to escape into the wilderness.

According to the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC, there are around 1300 Recreation and Trail sites around the province and some of these sites are targets of vandals.

This disrespectful behaviour can mostly be seen at sites in remote areas of the province.

Outdoor Recreation Council of BC says some of these areas are maintained by local volunteer recreation groups in partnership with Recreation Sites and Trails BC. WATCH VIDEO:

In the province recreation sites offer a rustic camping experience. The rec sites provide basic facilities, such as fire rings, picnic tables and outhouses.

It may be difficult to understand the motive behind these acts of vandalism. One thing is clear; this criminal behaviour can lower the motivation for those volunteers who maintain the rec sites.

Whether vandals cut down nearby trees for firewood or carved their initials into picnic tables or trees, their actions have an effect that goes far beyond aesthetics.

The Conservations Officer Service needs the public to help in preserving these special areas for future generations by reporting vandals to their RAPP line. WATCH THE FULL VIDEO STORY:
