Mandatory COVID Vaccine?

COVID vaccine coming

PRINCE GEORGE – Vaccinations are a controversial subject at the best of times. Health care officials are scrambling to create a vaccine for COVID-19, with human trials set to take place in Singapore as early as August. CKPG Today conducted a poll on its Facebook site, asking

“If a COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, would you get it?

Of the 5,313 respondents, 42% said yes, while 58% said no.

Some of the comments were:

“Not until they disclose exactly what is in it and it has been tested for a few years.”

“I’m not sure…. I have other health issues, but I’m not really willing to go blindly and get it. I’ve never had a flu shot.”

While others said:

“Definitely, yes. I don’t understand why so many people are afraid of vaccines. What is the fear?”

“Yes. I have bad asthma so if I were to get the virus I would most likely die from it.”

Dr. Alex Laudensach is an expert in the field of bioethics for the University of Northern BC. He has doubts the COVID-19 virus will be what drives governments to make the vaccine mandatory.

“I don’t see it anytime soon. Especially in a society like in Canada. We place great importance on individual freedoms and liberty. In this kind of situation, we tend to trust more the bottom-up management of a disease like this, rather than a top-down.”

Precedent has been set, though, at a micro-level. A year ago, with an outbreak measles, schools were requiring students to prove vaccination before registering for school and hospital workers are required to get the flu shot or wear a mask.

The issue is so controversial, though, that Dr. Laudensach and others in the field of bioethics will be publishing a book this summer, looking at how health security can impact human security.
