VICTORIA–27 new cases including one epi-linked case of COVID-19 were reported today (July 24) in B.C., the Northern Health Authority accounts for two of those new cases.

The joint statement by Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, and Health Minister, Adrian Dix says that the total of test-positive cases in the province is now at 3,419.

Cases by Health Region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 1,057
  • Fraser Health: 1,764
  • Vancouver Island Health: 142
  • Interior Health: 319
  • Northern Health: 79
  • People who reside outside of Canada: 58

The Northern Health Authority now sits at 79 test-positive cases, two more than yesterday. There are a total of 294 active cases, 12 of those in hospital and three are in ICU.

One new death related to COVID-19 was reported for a total of 191 deaths in B.C. There are no new health-care outbreaks. The province remains at a total of three active outbreaks in health-care.

One new community outbreak has been reported on Haida Gwaii, with 13 people who have tested positive for the virus. Of the 13 one person has recovered and 12 are considered active cases.

“At this time cases are all local residents. While the initial source of transmission is still being investigated, the cases are all epidemiologically linked. Some are related residents who had recently travelled off island, and others are from exposure to known cases.”–Joint statement by Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C. Provincial Health Officer, and Adrian Dix, B.C. Health Minister

A release from Northern Health says that all of the active cases are self-isolating at home and that “clear processes are in place for identifying and informing close contacts, so they can take appropriate precautions.” The release from NH adds that there is no evidence of wider community transmission on Haida Gwaii.

“Northern Health and the First Nations Health Authority are working with Council of Haida Nation and municipal governments on Haida Gwaii to coordinate community responses and medical supports, which includes providing housing options for self-isolation near communities with higher levels of care,” adds the release. In order to bend the curve on the cluster of islands, Northern Health is asking residents to continue to take safety measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

A new community exposure event was announced in Kelowna. Anyone who may have visited Fossello’s clothing store in Kelowna on July 18 or 20 is asked to monitor themselves for any symptoms and to contact 811 if symptoms do develop.

Both Dr. Henry and Minister Dix are urging British Columbians to access their risks before spending time with others this summer.

“Can you keep a safe distance from others? Are you giving people the space to stay safe? Are you spending a short time together? Are you outside? Are the people you are with in your bubble? These are the questions we all need to ask ourselves.”–Joint statement by Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C. Provincial Health Officer, and Adrian Dix, B.C. Health Minister

“If you can’t say yes to these questions, then say no to the activity and choose to do something else instead,” reads the statement. With a nice weekend in store for most of the province, Henry and Dix are asking B.C. residents to be mindful of their activities.
