British Columbians now able to access ICBC data online

RICHMOND–Increasing transparency with British Columbians, that is what ICBC aims at doing by allowing B.C. residents access to comprehensive new data, online.

British Columbians are now able to head online and view extensive crash and vehicle population data.”Making sure the public is well-informed and supported is a priority,” said ICBC’s president and CEO, Nicolas Jimenez in a release by ICBC.

The initiative supports the B.C. government’s Open Data initiative, launched by the Province back in 2011, aimed at engaging citizens and allowing for innovative opportunities in B.C.

British Columbia became the first province in Canada to publish its data under an open license.

British Columbians are able to customize the new data sets or download the data in its entirety. Vehicle population data includes various fields such as municipality, vehicle type or area based on the first three characters of postal code. Crash data can be filtered to the details of an individual crash, including the street and crash configuration. ICBC says that more data will be added as the year continues on topics including contraventions and driver licensing.
