Province provides $1.5 million for local sport organizations facing financial struggles amidst pandemic

VICTORIA–The Province is providing $1.5 million to help local sport organizations with fixed costs amidst the pandemic.

British Columbia has over 4,100 local sports organizations and the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many to face financial challenges with the lack of registration fees, event revenues and sponsorships.

“People in the sport community have felt the effects of COVID-19 profoundly. This funding will help local organizations pay their bills and keep our communities active.”–Lisa Beare, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture

A release from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture says that without the funding, British Columbians would have reduced access to sport, something that could take up to two years to re-build. According to the Province, rural and remote communities along with underrepresented populations are disproportionately affected by a reduction in physical activity opportunities as a result of the pandemic.
