RCMP warn of phone scam targeting Dawson Creek residents

Jul 29, 2020 | 7:00 AM

DAWSON CREEK–RCMP are warning the public of a phone scam that has been targeting Dawson Creek residents.

A release from Dawson Creek RCMP says that scammers are calling victims from numbers that may appear on Caller ID to be the same number as government departments and then proceed to ask for personal information.

“Recently, a victim reported having received a call from; what he thought to be, the Canada Revenue Agency. In this instance the caller was able to gain from the victim the last 3 digits of his SIN number as well as his physical address. The information which the caller gleaned from this phone call may be used in future identity frauds against the victim.”–Release from Dawson Creek RCMP

Another instance included a scammer calling from what seemed to be an RCMP phone number (on Caller ID) and attempted to gain the victim’s SIN number, however, was unsuccessful.

Some common phone and text scams to be aware of include the CERB Cheque scam: A text message alerts a customer indicating that they have received a deposit for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit and directs them to click an attached link; Utility Services or Phone/Internet Company Scam: A customer receives a text message indicating they are receiving a refund and provides an attached link; Caller ID Spoofing Scam: The caller deliberately disguises their phone number to appear on caller ID in order to hide their identity. The caller does this to trick you into believing they are a legit company.

RCMP are reminding Dawson Creek residents that if the conversation seems off to hang up the phone, to not respond to calls or texts from unknown or suspicious phone numbers, not to click on attached links and not to give personal or financial information through the phone or text messages.
