RICHMOND–Be safe on the roads this long weekend, that’s the message from ICBC to British Columbians.

In the North Central Interior of the province, there is an average of 26 people injured in 130 crashes on the B.C. Day long weekend, every year, according to ICBC statistics. Provincially there’s an average of four people killed and 620 people injured in 2,200 crashes across B.C. every year.

In hopes of preventing any accidents, ICBC has some tips to keep you safe on the roads. If you are travelling out of town plan ahead and become familiar with other means of transportation if you are planning on drinking. Know the options in your area such as taxis, transit or ride-sharing.

According to ICBC most crashes on the B.C. Day long weekend take place on Friday. ICBC advises leaving for a trip on Thursday or Saturday morning, if possible, to avoid any traffic congestion and potential delays. Being well-rested and planning your route on DriveBC also play a role in staying safe.

Doing a pre-trip check which includes checking the status of your vehicle for any road trip is a must. And lastly, keep in mind that summer means more motorcycles and R.V.’s on the road, keep an eye out for motorcyclists and be patient with R.V.’s.

ICBC is also reminding British Columbians that RCMP across the province will be setting up CounterAttack road checks in an attempt to keep impaired drivers off the roads.
