New tent making socializing easier for those living in hospice

PRINCE GEORGE – For those living in the Prince George’s Rotary Hospice House, socializing just got a lot easier.

It was Executive Director Donna Flood’s idea to get the approximately 500 square foot tent, so family members could visit their loved ones in hospice while obeying the strict COVID-19 restrictions.

“I was overwhelmed at the amount of support from the community” says Flood. “The community believed in our idea and that’s how it became a reality.”

The idea sprung from when a large family was trying to visit a loved one in hospice. The only way for the family to do so while observing all of the COVID-19 protocols in place was to put lawn chairs outside.

The tent isn’t only used for the purpose of visiting though.

The Prince George Hospice Society says they’ve seen an increase in the need for grief support since COVID-19 restrictions were introduced in March, an area where the new tent has been of great value.

Grief Support Coordinator Fay Leman says having the space makes grieving easier. She says grieving has become difficult where Leman says face-to-face meetings are crucial to give people the support they need.

“This tent is also open to the public for a variety of uses which can include celebrations of life, and funerals” says Leman.

Leman and Flood both say that the space is for the community, with the cost of renting the shelter by-donation to the Prince George Hospice Society.
