VICTORIA–Two new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Northern Health region today (Aug.13).

The new cases bring the total of test-positive cases in the north to 106.

Cases by Health region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 1,306
  • Fraser Health: 2,242
  • Vancouver Island Health: 150
  • Interior Health: 398
  • Northern Health:106
  • People outside of Canada: 72

Provincially, 78 new cases were reported for a total of 4,274 since the beginning of the pandemic. Currently, there are 578 active cases, nine people are in hospital, and of those four are in ICU. There are no new deaths to COVID-19 in B.C., with Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix reporting one single death in the month of August, so far.

The newest modelling data shows that recently there has been an increase in COVID-19 cases in people between the ages of 20-29. When we take a look at the beginning of the year, cases were, for the most part, proportionately distributed by age group across B.C., with a slighter effect on older people. From May 19 to June 23 we began to see a slight uptick in cases in those aged 20-29. The most recent uptick in those aged 20-29 between June 24 to Aug.5, accounts for the larger proportion of active cases at this time. Dr.Bonnie Henry says the increase in this particular age group can be mostly attributed to gatherings and events across the province.

“We are on an upward trajectory…that is concerning but it’s not a predictive model it doesn’t tell us what’s going to happen, it tells us what can happen. And right now we have it within our ability to bend that curve back down.”–Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer

Modelling projections suggest that the number of cases of the virus could increase throughout the summer if we continue on the current path we are on. Dr. Henry says that the curve can be bent back down by keeping our contacts safe by continuing to be safe ie. wearing masks, staying home when sick and staying in smaller groups.

The Province announced yesterday that it would invest in 500 health professionals across B.C. to help with contact tracing, something Henry says has served as a buffer to British Columbians against the renewed growth of COVID-19 cases. While that buffer is there, Henry says that it is important to not forget to continue to follow the health and safety guidelines laid out by health officials.

3,500 people have recovered from COVID-19 in B.C.
