Conservatives set to elect new party leader

PRINCE GEORGE — Conservative Party of Canada members will decide their next leader this week.

Mail-in ballots are due Friday with the winner expected to be announced on Sunday.

Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies Conservative MP Bob Zimmer and Cariboo-Prince George Conservative MP Todd Doherty have both endorsed Peter MacKay.

Though Mackay’s the favourite to win, CNC political science lecturer Chris Beach says with a ranked ballot, the top spot is up for grabs if Mackay is unable to win on the first ballot.

“So, with the ranked ballot leadership race, it’s really unpredictable if somebody doesn’t take it on the first ballot. For example, Peter MacKay, the frontrunner, he could be vulnerable on the second, third and fourth ballots.

“And if you remember three years ago, Andrew Scheer was not the frontrunner. I believe he won on the 13th ballot by one per cent. So, if Mackay doesn’t win on the first ballot, you could see someone else taking the leadership.”

Beach also thinks picking a moderate like MacKay may be the best thing for the party.

“You saw a social conservative leader with Andrew Scheer last time around and that arguably cost them the election. If the Conservatives choose a more socially moderate leader they might have a much better chance of winning the next election and taking government back from a Trudeau government that has seen its popularity and support diminish, specifically in the last election.”

The other leadership candidates are Erin O’Toole, Leslyn Lewis and Derek Sloan.
