Sep 8, 2020 | 4:19 PM

September isn’t just the start of fall, it is also a month that arthritis society’s across Canada use to ramp up awareness about the illness.

Arthritis isn’t one single disease, as a matter of fact, it is an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease and there are more than 100 types of conditions related to it.

“It’s not just an old person’s disease, which a lot of people think…it affects anybody.”–Christine Basque, Executive Director of The Arthritis Society, BC and Yukon Division

Children can suffer from juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and according to Basque over 50 per cent of people living with arthritis are under the age of 65.

For The Arthritis Society raising awareness about the illness is highly important, especially during September—Arthritis Awareness Month. According to the Society more than 6 million people are living with arthritis in Canada and those numbers are expected to climb to 9 million by 2040.

Arthritis can have impacts on physical health, with pain and lowered mobility, however, it can also have emotional and mental health impacts on individuals.

According to the Arthritis Society, Arthritis is Canada’s most chronic health condition. There is no cure to the illness, however, treatments and medications do exist.
