Northern B.C. mine switching over to clean energy source
VANDERHOOF—A mine in Northern B.C. is switching over to a clean energy source, in an attempt to help reduce green house gas emissions, supported by the government’s Clean B.C. plan.
The Province is contributing $400,000 to help install an overhead powerline from Mount Milligan Mine, north of Vanderhoof, to a nearby pumping facility at Phillips Lake. The powerline with will replace diesel-powered generators and pumps with grid-connected electric equipment.
“We are working together with industry to encourage investment in clean technology that will reduce pollution, support good jobs and create new opportunities in a global marketplace that is increasingly looking for cleaner products.”—George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy
The project is expected to reduce close to 48,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent over the next ten years, comparable to taking more than 17,000 cars off the road for a year.
