Rally against provincial plan to cull 400 moose and their calves

WILLIAMS LAKE—People gathered in Williams Lake today (Sept.23) to rally against the Provincial government’s plan to cull 400 moose cows and their calves in an attempt to starve off wolf populations.

Amongst those gathered were First Nation Chiefs, local hunters, guide outfitters, members of agricultural communities and civic representatives.

A leaked memo from the Province earlier this year indicated that baby moose and their mothers would be culled in an attempt to starve off wolf populations that potentially threaten endangered caribou populations.

“Everyone knows that wolves are resourceful hunters and will seek out other prey, including caribou,” said Simmons. Simmons adds that no one was consulted in advance.

Simmons says they are calling on the provincial government to suspend their cull, along with the cancellation of the open season and unrestricted hunt for calves he says runs from Oct. 1 to 25 in designated areas.
