PRINCE GEORGE – With Tampa Bay Lightning Head Coach Jon Cooper in the midst of a Stanley Cup run, support is picking up in PG.

Born and raised in BC’s Northern Capital, Cooper played minor hockey in the city until moving away in grade 9.

The Black Clover has staff wearing brand new t-shirts to show their support. Prior to Friday night’s game, they’re undefeated.

“We thought it just made sense and it’s something for the staff to get behind,” said Owner of The Black Clover, Troy McKenzie.

McKenzie says as of right now, the shirts are not for sale, he says they made roughly 25 of them for staff only.

For Bill Wettlaufer, watching this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs, he isn’t just cheering for Tampa Bay, he’s cheering for his childhood friend ‘Coop’.

“Maybe, Kindergarten, grade-1, around 3-o-clock, everybody is rushing home from school, we grab the sticks, we grab the nets, and we would play road hockey in front of my house ” said Wettlaufer. “We played to win the Stanley Cup, Jon’s favourite team was the Boston Bruins.”

Wettlaufer also played on the same minor hockey team as Cooper in 1975-76 as shown in the image below.

Cooper is shown in the top left of the photo, Wetlauffer says everyone in PG is so proud of where his longtime friend is today, and will always be a part of the local community.

Wettlauffer says he hopes the bench boss can win the cup and hopefully even with COVID-19 bring the cup back home.
