Winter tire regulations in effect, enforcement will be lenient until winter weather

PRINCE GEORGE — As of Wednesday, winter tires are required on many BC routes. Within Prince George city limits there are a few spots where you will need them – Victoria Street, 20th Avenue, and Highways 16 and 97.

Signs can be found along the highways and maps have been put up online for the different regions of the province along with a reminder to be prepared for seasonal driving conditions. RCMP are pushing the message that enforcement is not about the tickets, rather safety.

“Although it is nice and balmy today, it could be snowing tomorrow. Someone may say today why do I need winter tires? It’s that day when there is snow and ice on the ground and you can’t make it up Peden Hill. That’s the day that is going to be causing a lot of problems for traffic and the driver themselves,” explained Sgt. Kyle Ushock.

When it comes to winter tires there are a few recommended options. The M+S is viable as an all-season but most auto-service providers would tell you for northern BC, that will probably not be enough. Tristen Popowich, OK Tire Service Advisor, said, “where we live, I definitely recommend a three-peak mountain snowflake or at least an all-weather. There is a bit of a difference between all-season and all-weather where an all-season just has the M+S and an all-weather has that three-peak mountain snowflake that you can run 12 months out of the year.”
