Duchess Park votes

PRINCE GEORGE – Once again, the students and staff at Duchess Park are heading to the polls, but in the school itself.

Monsieur Patrice LaPointe is putting on a mock election in light of the snap provincial election. And it isn’t the first time. He held his first mock election in 2015.

“I think it’s very important for those kids now to know about elections,” explains LaPointe. “To keep current because they’re going to be the next voters.”

In the past, the event had district election offices in a classroom where all the ballot boxes were set up. But COVID changed everything.

“So we just put 30 ballots in an envelope and handed one out to each class,” explains Olivia Masich, Grade 11 student. “The students got about 15 minutes to finish their vote and we went back to collect the envelopes.”

For Jana Engel, also in Monsieur LaPointe’s Social Studies class, it was a fantastic experience.

“It’s very interesting to allow students who aren’t able to vote yet, get them to do a mock vote so that they can learn how it will work when they’re allowed to vote and it’s good to see the students get politically-engaged.”

Of course, while the ballots will be tallied tonight, we won’t know what the results of that election are until the real McKoy is done on October 24th.
