‘It’s disappointing’, Halloween fireworks events cancelled in PG

PRINCE GEORGE – For the first time in 31 years, the skies above College Heights won’t be lit up with Halloween fireworks.

“It’s disappointing,” says organizer Jean Petrovic. “It would’ve been an awesome event to have for the community, but there’s no way we can get people to be six feet apart.”

Petrovic says the City of Prince George told the College Heights Community Association back in the summer to cancel any large events.

Petrovic says there’s just no way it can happen with the current public health guidelines, hoping by 2021 the curve will be flattened to have the fireworks lit once again.

Because of larger organized celebrations being cancelled, Starlight FX says they expect an increase in people doing their own fireworks at home.

Halloween is one of three days in the calendar year where you can legally launch fireworks within city limits. Other days include New Year’s and Canada Day.

Deputy Fire Chief with PG Fire-Rescue, Paul Knudsgaard says people need to educate themselves on the existing bylaws before they light up the sky.

Knudsgaard says you should make sure to stay on private property and stay clear of trees and other types of vegetation to avoid fire hazards.

The pyrotechnics company who takes care of the ‘lit’ part of the celebration says this is just another nail in the coffin for what’s already been an extremely tough year financially.

“The planning for these events usually begins well over a year in advance,” says Co-Owner Drew Larsen. “We now have to sit on hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of product.”
