VICTORIA — COVID-19 cases continue to surge in British Columbia.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says there were 1,933 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend in B.C., including 61 new cases in Northern Health. From Friday to Saturday 713 people came down with the virus, 626 people from Saturday to Sunday and another 594 from Sunday to Monday.

She says 17 people died over the weekend – the majority seniors in long-term care homes – for a total of 348 in the province.

There are 7,360 active cases of the virus, 277 people are hospitalized – 59 of whom are in critical care or intensive care.

Eighteen people are currently hospitalized in Northern Health, nine of whom are in critical care.

There has been a new outbreak in Fort St. John, at the North Peace Seniors Housing Society apartments where there are currently six confirmed cases.

Henry urges British Columbians to follow the provincial health orders initiated last week to help flatten the curve, including sticking to household gatherings only and avoiding play dates.

Several seasonal events have also been suspended until Dec.7.
