Phase one of the project, laying the foundation, has officially wrapped up. Now phase two begins with the construction of the pool’s mechanical rooms, change rooms, and lobby; the building envelope will follow. This process is scheduled to last into spring 2021.

City Council was successful in its bid for an additional $10-million from the provincial and federal governments. During Monday’s meeting, Kyle Sampson made known his opinion for the yet-to-be-decided funds.

“What my hope is, is that we are going to use that to take the total budget and bring it down. This is not a contingency, this is not $10-million on top of the $35-million. That’s how I see it and that’s what I’m going to be pushing for,” he followed.

“If there’s something small or if there’s something that’s $10,000 more, and we can enhance the pool in some way that’s going to be better for the community, that’s worthwhile; but let’s not take a big chunk of that $10-million and blow this up to something that it wasn’t supposed to be.”

Sampson stressed the importance of keeping a close eye on the pool project specifically moving forward as the City will be reviewing its capital project processes. Meanwhile, traffic disruptions will continue near the construction zone. That includes flashing red lights at the 7th Avenue and Dominion Street intersection and varying lane closures.

The downtown pool project is scheduled for completion in late summer, early fall of 2022.
