Trucker killed in Alaska Highway collision

TAYLOR — One person is dead following a collision on the Alaska Highway Sunday morning.

Dawson Creek RCMP S/Sgt. Damon Werrell says police were dispatched to a report of a crash just before 7 a.m. just south of 230 Road in South Taylor.

“Officers immediately attended and found two vehicles involved, one of which was a tanker truck hauling crude oil which had become engulfed in flames.”

He says preliminary investigation revealed that the tanker truck was traveling north on the Alaska Highway and struck an unoccupied vehicle which had been left parked or abandoned on the side of the highway.

“The tanker truck rolled over into the ditch as a result of the impact and immediately became engulfed in flames. Unfortunately, the driver did not survive,” says Werrell.

He says police have been unable so far to make contact with the family and the roadway will remain closed while being repaired.
