Construction of new fire hall coming to an end

PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George residents have been watching the new $17 million fire hall emerge on Massey Drive for months. Some staff are already settled in while others will be moving in stages.

“There was a whole team that worked together to look at the best practices in what a modern fire station needed in a city like Prince George,” explains John Iverson, Fire Chief.

He and the other members of Administration are moved in already, housed on the third floor while the fire suppression crews will move in later this month. That’s when the facility will officially become the new Fire Hall #1. The dispatch will move into the second floor closer to the end of the year.

“The building design itself will also serve to improve response times. Fire Rescue crews’ workspaces and living quarters are located in close proximity to the fire apparatus. This means that when the fire alarm rings, the firefighters are able to quickly access their gear, board the fire trucks, and leave the building,” says Iverson.

So, the question remains, once everyone has moved out, what happens to the old fire hall?

“We haven’t had any conversations with Council or Administration to talk about it. It’s a valuable site for a number of reasons.”
