Weekend food drive to benefit Salvation Army

PRINCE GEORGE — A city wide food drive will take place outside all the Save-On-Food locations in town Saturday.

Organizer Dave Mothus say the goal is to raise as much money and food as possible for the Salvation Army, who say their number of clients doubled during the month of December.

“Basically we’ll have a truck from Wood Wheaton that’s going to be parked outside the exit door of every Save-On-Foods,” says Mothus, adding the Salvation Army was chosen because the non-profit helps a lot of people.

“So, this year in particular, we’re seeing an increased demand for support from the Salvation Army,” notes Major Neil Wilkinson. “We served 954 households in the month of December. That translates into 2,547 mouths fed. It equates to 46,000 pounds of food being distributed and 11,000 pounds of food being distributed to our service partners that also provide support in the community.”

And while he greatly appreciates food donations, Wilkinson says cash donations would be even better as it triples their purchasing power because the Salvation Army buys their products in bulk.

The food drive will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donors will also have the chance to win one of four $100 gift cards.
